our solution to Multiple Fire risks

A superior suppression technology limits the consequences

Battery electric buses (BEBs) are transforming public transport. Yet, alongside their environmental and operational benefits lies a critical challenge: fire safety.

The risk of battery fires is often described in terms of probability. But risk is not just about how likely an event is – it is also about its consequences. While the probability of a thermal runaway is low, the consequences when it does occur are brutal and devastating.

Some incidents highlight this reality. On April 4th, 2022, a BEB in Paris caught fire. The driver evacuated 14 passengers within 20–30 seconds. Just 30–45 seconds after the first signs of fire, the bus was completely engulfed in flames. Only weeks later, on April 29th, a second Paris BEB fire escalated even faster – from initial smoke to full ignition in just 17 seconds. In that case no passengers were on board, but the incident underscored the razor-thin margin for evacuation.

Evacuating a full bus typically takes 1.5–2.5 minutes, depending on vehicle size and passenger profile. This gap between available time and required time is the central safety challenge for BEBs – especially for coaches operating at highway speeds or with sleeping passengers.

Fogmaker Closes the Safety Gap

How it Works

Fogmaker’s new Sectioning Deployment Valve delivers targeted suppression to multiple critical compartments from a single fire suppression unit. Once a fire is detected, suppression is directed immediately to the affected zone.

From just one Fogmaker suppression cylinder, two minutes of sustained suppression in a battery compartment can be achieved. Adding a second unit doubles this window to four minutes – precious time for passengers to evacuate before conditions escalate beyond control.

Advantages

A Game-Changer for the Bus and Coach Industry

The system deploys high-pressure water mist at 105 bar, combined with a PFAS-free foam additive and potassium salts. This unique formula rapidly cools extreme heat, disrupts the chemical chain reaction of combustion, and displaces oxygen through steam expansion. Unlike conventional solutions, Fogmaker is fully independent of the vehicle’s power supply, ensuring reliability even in a total electrical shutdown.

About Fogmaker International

From first approved system to market leader

Fogmaker was the first fire suppression system approved according to R107. Today, Fogmaker is the leading suppression system in buses on the European market.

First fire suppression system approved in accordance with R107

Fogmaker is approved in accordance with the latest international standard for fire suppression systems in buses. Fogmaker became the first manufacturer to implement the official tests with successful results in October 2016. Fogmaker also made the first fire suppression system available with the type approval – UNECE Regulation No.107 Cert. No. 06001 (2017-01-18).

Fire testing procedure follows four tests from SP method 4912.
